Raw Hair for Kosher Wigs (Sheitels): A Sourcing Guide for Makers

29 AUG 2026 · BY THE IRANIANHAIR TEAM · 7 MIN READ

No corner of the wig trade takes hair origin more seriously than the sheitel market — and for good reason. For sheitel makers, provenance is not a marketing claim; it is a religious requirement with a history. This guide covers that history, what it means for sourcing in 2026, and how to vet a supplier against it.

2004: The Year Provenance Became Everything

In May 2004, leading halachic authorities ruled that hair offered in Hindu temple ceremonies may not be used in sheitels, because it originates in a religious rite. The ruling shook the entire trade: wigs were set aside overnight, and makers scrambled to prove where their hair actually came from. The lasting consequence is the defining rule of kosher wig sourcing today: you must be able to show how the hair left the donor's head. If a supplier cannot document that, no other quality claim matters.

What That Rules Out — and Why It's Hard

A large share of the world's hair supply is temple-collected or passes through blending houses where origins mix. "European hair" labels are widely abused precisely because sheitel demand pays a premium for them. The result: makers pay Slavic prices and still can't always answer the provenance question with documents. That is the gap worth closing.

FAQ

Why is Indian hair a problem for kosher wigs?
In 2004, leading halachic authorities ruled that hair originating from Hindu temple rituals — where hair is offered in a religious ceremony — may not be used in sheitels. Since much Indian hair is temple-collected and supply chains blend sources, many certifiers treat Indian-origin hair as problematic unless its provenance is proven otherwise.
Is Iranian hair acceptable for sheitels?
Its provenance is straightforwardly commercial: hair is purchased from individual donors for cash in village collections — a business transaction, not a religious ceremony. We document that chain of custody for every lot. The final halachic determination always belongs to your rav or certifying agency; our role is to provide the provenance evidence they ask for.
What texture works best for sheitels?
European-family texture: fine strands, soft natural movement, and natural brown-to-light bases that can be color-matched with minimal processing. Length matters too — premium sheitels typically start at 18–22 inches, which is why 50–70 cm raw lots command the strongest demand.
