How Many Wigs Can You Make From 1 Kg of Hair?
It is the first question every new wig maker asks a wholesale supplier, and the honest answer has a range, not a single number: at least 4, at most 6 wigs per kilogram.
What Moves You Inside the 4–6 Range
- Cap construction. A full lace cap covering the whole head consumes more hair than a lace-front or a topper base. Bigger cap, fewer wigs per kilo.
- Ventilation / sewing technique. Hand-tied, knot-by-knot ventilation uses hair more efficiently than machine-sewn wefting, which loses length in the weft fold. Technique alone can swing the yield by a full wig per kilo.
- Target density. A 180%-density showpiece drinks hair; a natural 120% everyday unit sips it. Your product positioning decides your consumption.
The Purchasing Math
Working backwards: one wig consumes roughly 165–250 grams of hair. So a 7 kg package yields roughly 28–42 units; at a $300–800 wholesale price per finished premium unit, the arithmetic of a kilogram becomes obvious quickly. This is why serious wig makers buy by the kilo, not by the bundle — and why every package on our live stock board is listed with its exact weight and full price.
One More Variable: Waste
Yield assumes usable hair. Thin 50–100g donor cuts force blending and produce more prep waste; fuller single-donor material — Iranian hair typically yields 150g+ per donor — goes further per kilogram. When you compare origins on price, compare them on usable yield too.
